concept title:
Woven bird
Concept:
As a young boy Mark dreamt of becoming a zoologist. Constantly bringing home wounded birds and nursing them back to health. Fascinated by the bone structure of their wings. This is how he was draw to the works of Russian artist Naum Gabo, known for his wire sculptures that often resemble bird wings. In this collection fine metal rods were used and covered with wool and cotton yarns stretched in circular patterns, recalling the colour distribution of an exotic bird’s wing. All garments are hand woven, some over delicate wire constructions and some at home on a loom. The entire process was self-taught and more intuitive than calculated: starting from a basic silhouette, slowly building up the structure as if adding flesh and feathers to a skeleton.
